Horslips - The Man Who Built America - 1979

A concept album about an Irish emigrant who makes a success of himself in the US, this album is energetic and often engaging, with some excellent songs ("The Man Who Built America") and some tepid stretches. The Irish content is fairly subdued here, with the overall sound favoring rock songs built around moderately complicated hooks. -AMG

This is one of the finest pop-rock albums ever recorded, but it's constantly maligned, because it's just not what people expected out of Horslips after years of grest Celtic Folk and rock. Even the so-called 'tepid stretches' fit the album's concept, and the thing plays verey well as a whole.

Of course it didn't hurt that I was growing into young adulthood when this disc hit Album Rock radio with its themes of longing and loneliness.

A classic. Thanks for this and for the uniformly high quality of this site.
