E-I-E-I-O - That Love Thang - 1998

Wisconsin roots-rockers E*I*E*I*O run the gamut of all-American revivalist styles: rockabilly, country, blues, folk, and good old-fashioned rock & roll. Vocalist Steve Summers and bassist Richard Szeluga write most of the songs, supported by guitarists Rob Harding (formerly of Off Broadway) and Mike Hoffman, and drummer Tommy Ciaccio. This 1988 CD is the band's 2nd (and sadly, last) release following their stunning 1986 debut Land of Opportunity. It is every bit as good (and overlooked) as that release. It's a shame these guys never got the attention they so deserved. - Amazon.com

Thanks so much for this and your other posts. Great blog and thanks for your hard work. EIEIO were a great and sadly underrated and now obscure band to most. Land of Opportunity is one of my Desert Island Discs. Any chance you might post that as well? Thanks again.

Good call! This one's hard to find. I got mine from a high school that wanted to rid itself of vinyl.

both of their albums are solid from start to finish. Pretty much every copy I've ever seen for sale has been used, with promo markings. So the record company was definitely sending them out to the stations. The fact that I never seen non-promos for sale either means that the distribution failed to get the albums out there, or (more likely) that nobody who bought them ever wants to get rid of them.

anybody who likes this sound needs to look up The Rainmakers and Cowboy Mouth, especially the early albums by both bands. And the Cowboy Mouth connection will probably take you to Dash Rip Rock, who also did well with this general sound.

Some of these guys were from Rockford, IL... Rick worked at the record store where I bought all my vinyl. They played a festival I booked back in the late 80's.

Excellent post for an excellent album. This blew me away when I first heard it during my time in college radio. The good news is that the band is active again & released a self-titled album in 2007. It's worth every penny & an excellent companion to their classic material. Check here for more info:

I enjoy this recording, but the first one is better in almost every way.

Rockford may have some claim to them, but I've always considered them another great Madison, WI band that should've made it bigger than they did. That first album in particular was a stunner - better than anything by the Bodeans, I thought, though their first album was great and the shows they played in support of it were stunning.

EIEIO had a gym full of punks and kids and old people dancing for hours to their country twang one night at Turner Hall - one of my favorite shows of theirs. Sometimes, live, they'd go off tangent and deliver almost Television-esque guitar freakouts in the middle of country rockers. Great band. Used to sell the singer fancy coffee table remainder art books when I worked at the University Bookstore in Madison.

THANK YOU for this! I have this on vinyl and nearly wore it out. All I wanted now was to be able to spin the same thing I bought, on my iPod. Thanks so much!
